K&C – Contemporary dance with a cause

The mission of K&C is to promote dance as an intellectual art form with strong potential in political and poetic communication of gender. The company was founded in 1996. K&C works at Cable Factory, Helsinki, where the company has a studio stage K&C Space. Besides producing own ensemble and solo works K&C organizes national and international guest performances.

The creator of K&C is choreographer-dancer Sanna Kekäläinen. Her work expands the experience of a dance performance by combining philosophy, feminism, text and conceptual thinking with highly original movement language. Sanna Kekäläinen has been described as a provocateur, problem-setter, poet and promoter of female existence.

The company has toured extensively and it has been recognised highly artistic, thought provoking and outstanding in the homeland as well as around the world.

1.    I never knew how to sell myself.
2.    I never wanted to.
3.    I hope You love me.
4.    I have tried to reach and communicate the honesty of human mind and body. Let me tell you, it’s shit difficult.
5.    I love You.
6.    These are my latent and emerging images of love.

Hafed is a longtime friend of mine. He was born in Algeria and lives paperless in Paris. I’ve had the privilege to follow his life from close.

This stage reality is an effort to perceive solely Hafed’s corporeality.
When I was working on this piece, I realized it was impossible to make a representation of Hafed’s life, because the reality he lives in is so strange and composed of such mutually contradicting elements that it can’t be captured in a sole representation.

That is the reason this stage reality is a collage on one hand of differences, on the other of fragility that connects people.

When starting this work I posed two questions to the working group.
Working in the rehearsal period was based in these questions and we work with them in the performance. The questions are:
Who and where am I?
How do I perceive my body and my sexuality? –    Sanna Kekäläinen
